Diros Caves

The Vlychada Cave of Diros is one of the most impressive caves in Greece. It began forming hundreds of thousands of years ago and opened to the public in 1967. With a maximum depth of 80 meters and underwater stalactites found as deep as 71 meters, the cave reveals traces of ancient life — including fossils of panthers, hyenas, lions, deer, martens, and even hippopotamuses.

The visitor route is 1,500 meters long (1,200 meters of which are navigated by boat), and the tour lasts about 25 minutes. Located in western Mani, the cave is approximately 15–20 minutes from Areopoli.

Areopoli

The historical capital of Mani, Areopoli is where the Greek War of Independence began in 1821. This traditional village—birthplace of the legendary Mavromichalis family—features cobblestone streets, stone towers, charming shops, and colorful corners.

Don’t miss the Church of the Archangels at March 17th Square and the statue of Petrobey Mavromichalis in Athanaton Square.

Sunset at Limeni

Just 10 minutes from Areopoli, Limeni is a picturesque seaside village with stone houses perched above turquoise waters. There are only a few spots to access the sea, but a swim here is well worth it—especially at sunset.

Kardamyli

Kardamyli is divided into the Old and New Town. In the old quarter, stroll through narrow alleys adorned with bougainvillea, visit the traditional Maniot towers and Byzantine churches, and step into a world once ruled by pirates and corsairs.

The new town offers shops, cafés, and bars—all built in harmony with the region’s natural and historical beauty.

Limeni
As the port of Areopoli, Limeni is one of the most scenic settlements in Laconian Mani. Here you’ll find the grand residence of Petrobey Mavromichalis, featuring a four-story tower and arched windows—a testament to the area’s rich revolutionary heritage. His tomb and bust can also be found here.

Oitylo

This area boasts 67 traditional stone-built villages that captivate visitors. Explore medieval castles, Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches with stunning frescoes, timeworn towers, and cobblestone paths.

Visit notable churches such as Saint George, the Transfiguration of the Savior, the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Archangels, and the historic Dekoulou Monastery.

Oitylo is also renowned for its speleological interest, with dozens of caves — including the famous Diros Caves — drawing visitors from around the world.

Mourtzinos Tower (Kardamyli)

Located in Kardamyli, this is one of the most important historical towers in western Mani. Built in 1807, it belonged to the prominent naval figure of the 1821 Revolution, Troupakis Mourtzinos.

The fortified complex includes a tower, a three-story residence (now a museum), a private chapel (Saint Spyridon), a blacksmith’s shop, a vegetable garden, an olive press, and three defensive enclosures. Admission: only €3.

Cape Tainaron Lighthouse

Situated at the southernmost tip of mainland Greece and the Balkan Peninsula, Cape Tainaron—known to sailors as Cape Matapan—divides the Messinian and Laconian Gulfs.

Built by the French in 1882, the square lighthouse stands 16 meters tall. Reaching it requires a scenic 45-minute hike along a rugged path, so wear proper footwear. The journey and the view are truly unforgettable.
